Close to the main entrances to Mount Kilimanjaro and the routes to the national parks are Moshi and Arusha.  Moshi is much smaller and closer to my lodge but most items can be purchased there including local mobile phones and money exchanges.  Visit the markets for a glimpse of African wares, food and take in the pungent aroma of the famous spices.

Why is the soil red?

The earth is called laterite.  It is fundamentally

made of clay with has become enriched with iron

and alluminium.  Iron, when oxidised, becomes red,

rusty, and so that is the colour of the soil.
